Affordable Housing Skyrise

My most intricate and complex project of my high school architecture experience was constructing a 6 story affordable housing complex. Over the course of 4 months, I was able to complete the design of this structure inclusive of 10 units per floor, with studio, one, two, and three bed apartment options. This complex is a solution for Chicago’s growing homeless problem, and is intended to be constructed on the southern tip of Goose Island on the northern end of downtown. On each floor there is a gathering space with a lounge near the elevator, allowing individuals to interact and develop relationships to form their own unique community. The ground level is furnished with a gym, restaurant, multiple conference rooms, and another lounge to provide the homeless additional accommodations to thrive in the building. The hardest part of constructing the skyrise was assembling all of the units and features together. Since each unit was designed separately, I needed to adjust some lengths and widths on the floor to ensure they fit cohesively together.
