University of Illinois Building Sketches
For my first project at the University of Illinois, I was assigned four vocabulary words and tasked with connecting each word to a building on campus. I then created freehand sketches of these buildings and explained the relationship between each structure and its corresponding vocabulary term.
Implied Stability – Weston Hall: Weston Hall demonstrates implied stability through its elevated structure. Although the ground level consists of open space supported only by columns, we know the building is stable because the three floors above remain standing. Diagonal lines in my sketch emphasize the open space created by the space between the columns below.
Repetition – Foellinger Auditorium: The front facade of Foellinger Auditorium shows repetition through the recurrence of columns, doors, and other elements throughout the entrance. Dashed lines in my drawing highlight this pattern.
Directionality – The Quad: The Quad shows directionality through the pathways created by student movement. Arrows in my sketch trace the routes people take as they navigate across the space toward their destinations.
Balance – McFarland Bell Tower: The McFarland Bell Tower embodies balance through its symmetrical composition. Identical architectural elements appear on both sides of the tower, creating visual balance. A center line in my drawing marks the axis of symmetry dividing the two halves.
